Mia Fonssagrives-Solow

The sweeping artistic vision of Mia Fonssagrives-Solow was forged by the time she was twelve years old. ‘I was a sixth grader at the Dalton School in New York City and can still remember the intoxicating smell in my woodworking class and the joy I felt at having something real in my hands at the end of the day. That passion has stayed with me throughout my life’. It has been a passion that decades later led to an extraordinarily varied and stellar career as a fashion designer, painter, sculptor and jewelry maker.

Starting her careen in Paris with a friend from art school, Mia designed collections for stores around the world, as well as clothes for movies such a Woody Allen’s What’s New Pussycat?, James Bond’s Thunderball and Elisabeth Taylor’s film The Only Game in Town.

Working as a sculptor over the years, Mia developed a technique to make sensuous pieces that are monumental in scale. Rather than carving single pieces of wood, these unique constructions are created by adhering layers of wood, cut with a saber tooth saw and then meticulously finished to reveal the smooth surfaces of the material.

Mia began designing jewelry in 1984 after an exhibition of her large scale pieces at the Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, New York. The installation was daunting and when it was over, Mia said ‘I think next year’s pieces will be smaller’ They were… two and three foot wooden beads, to which Elaine Benson, her art dealer, reacted by suggesting ‘Mia, why don’t you make some for people to wear?’ With this suggestion, the Mia’s abstract and animal jewelry collection was launched.

Mia has a strong link to Sweden, not only did her mother, Lisa Fonssagrives come from Udevalla on the Swedish West coast her jewelry with their fluid and sometimes asymmetric forms and clean lines are typical of Swedish timeless design – she has a rare combination of fun and simplicity!
