Katarina Andersson sees her objects as small sculptures. Her concept is to create objects that are individual, that can stand for themselves, contemporary, but with a long lifespan. She is interested in details; it could be small displacements in a shape, an unexpected choice of material or field of application. In her design she attempts to make every detail distinctive.

Katarina Andersson currently lives and works a freelance designer in Stockholm, Sweden. She has practiced as a ceramist and glass designer, working with one-piece productions and smaller series in porcelain and glass. She’s been working with industrial design for Villeroy & Boch of Germany, Covo s.r.l of Italy and Sweden’s Design House Stockholm and received several design awards, including Excellent Swedish Design, and Germany’s Red Dot. She is one of the founders of the new design company HAPPYsthlm.

Katarina teaches design at the University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm. She received her MFA in 1993 from the Department of Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack (the University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm). She was originally trained as a sculptor, but decided to apply to the glass and ceramics programme at the Konstfack, mainly because of the positive creativity she associated with design.

“HAMLA” cup and bowl in stoneware for HAPPYsthlm.
”Hamla” is Swedish and means to prune branches. I was interested in finding an alternative to the handle of the mug. And by simplifying the form of a branch on a trunk I found an expression for the simplicity I aimed for, and it is also very comfortable to hold, with the “twig” between your fingers.

“BLAD” trivet in cast iron for HAPPYsthlm
”Blad” is a trivet in cast iron, manufactured at a small ironworks in Sweden. At HAPPYsthlm, we attempt to work only with local Swedish industries that share our interest in quality and attention to detail.
